IRS begins receiving income tax returns this Monday; see the main rules
The Federal Revenue Service starts receiving income tax returns for 2026 on Monday, expecting to collect 44 million documents by May 29.
The Federal Revenue Service of Brazil has officially opened the window for income tax return submissions starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026. The agency forecasts that it will receive approximately 44 million declarations by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. on May 29. On the last business day of May, the first batch of refunds will be deposited, and the single installment along with the first installment of the tax payment will be due.
Taxpayers can file their declarations using the IRPF 2026 program which can be downloaded directly from the Federal Revenue website. Additionally, there is an option to use the Meu Imposto de Renda for a digital declaration, eliminating the need for software installation. Access can be done via the Federal Revenue website through the e-CAC (Virtual Attendance Center), a government digital service portal, or through the Federal Revenue's mobile application. This year's new features include pre-filled returns, which require a gold or silver Gov.br account for access, allowing for an easier online filing experience without the need for program installation.
Among the fresh updates is a dedicated section for declarations related to specific tax situations for this year. The accessibility of pre-filled returns aims to streamline the process and reduce the errors often associated with manual data entry. The improved online filing methods reflect a broader push towards digitization in tax collection, making it more efficient for citizens to fulfill their tax obligations while also facilitating the revenue collection process for the federal government.
