Woman who stole £300k from pensioner and spent it on Botox and expensive meals is tracked down in Tenerife
A fraudster who stole £300,000 from an elderly pensioner and used it for personal luxuries has been located in Tenerife.
Pamela Gwinnett, aged 63, has been located in Tenerife after committing fraud against 89-year-old Joan Green, a retired accountant. While pretending to care for her, Gwinnett isolated Green from her family and convinced her to transfer power of attorney, allowing her to access Green's life savings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gwinnett exploited this trust to withdraw £300,000 which she used for lavish expenses including Botox treatments and dining in expensive restaurants.
After draining the pensioner's finances, which she spent on luxury items such as a £22,500 car and various properties, Gwinnett breached her bail conditions by fleeing the UK. Following her sentencing in absentia to six years in prison, Sky News managed to confront Gwinnett outside her home in Tenerife, revealing the brazen nature of her crime and the deceit she employed to exploit a vulnerable individual.
This case not only highlights the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals like pensioners, especially during times of crisis such as the pandemic, but it also raises important questions about the process of caring for the elderly and preventing financial abuse. The sentencing and subsequent pursuit of Gwinnett demonstrates law enforcement's commitment to addressing fraud against vulnerable members of society and signifies a broader societal responsibility to safeguard against such exploitation.
