Riga Moves Closer to Becoming a Cycling Capital – When Will the Bicycle Paths Be Completed?
Riga is developing its bicycle infrastructure to promote cycling, but many paths are still incomplete or problematic, causing safety concerns for riders.
As spring arrives in Riga, cyclists are returning to the streets alongside the chirping birds and shining sun, yet many are faced with incomplete cycling paths and unsafe conditions. While certain cycling routes are in development or pending upgrades, cyclists find themselves sharing roads with cars and pedestrians, highlighting a lack of comprehensive infrastructure in the city. Currently, Riga lacks a unified cycling network, comprising only a few fragmented routes such as the Pārdaugava, Vecāķi, Mežaparks, and Daugava paths, which can abruptly end and leave cyclists feeling stranded. Efforts to improve the cycling infrastructure are underway, but with many paths still dug up or under construction, it remains unclear when these improvements will be completed and whether they will encourage more people to adopt cycling as a mode of transportation in Riga.
