Two months of phone calls monitored during the examination of Kariņš's flight case
The flight case involving Krišjānis Kariņš has led to two months of monitored phone calls of a former top state official as investigations proceed.
The ongoing case concerning former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has revealed significant developments as it involves Jānis Citskovskis, the only accused, who previously held the position of the state's top official. During a discussion with his colleague, he disclosed that his phone calls had been monitored for several months amid the investigations. Citskovskis criticized the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) for being overly lenient, suggesting that they are shielding higher-ranking officials from scrutiny regarding their questionable actions.
Citskovskis is also involved in legal disputes concerning his dismissal and suspension from office. A court ruling declared that the orders of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa regarding his suspension and disciplinary action were illegal. However, the court did not grant him the severance pay he sought. Citskovskis has appealed the latter decision while the suspension ruling has taken effect, resulting in the State Chancellery compensating him for his salary during the interim period, amounting to approximately 4,000 euros after taxes.
On April 7th, proceedings related to the so-called flight case of ex-Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš will commence at the Riga City Court. Only one individual is set to appear as an accused in these hearings, and it will not be Kariņš himself but the dismissed Citskovskis, emphasizing the focus on accountability in high-level governmental actions amidst public scrutiny and ongoing debates about corruption in Latvia.
