City that was once considered the most polluted in the world receives new green seal from the UN

Cubatão, previously notorious for its pollution, has been awarded an environmental seal from the UN's Tree Cities of the World program after significant urban greening efforts.

Cubatão, located in São Paulo, Brazil, has transformed its image from being labeled as the 'Valley of Death' for its extreme pollution levels to receiving recognition from the United Nations. The city has recently qualified for a coveted environmental seal from the Tree Cities of the World program, which is managed by the Arbor Day Foundation. This certification acknowledges cities that implement effective management practices for urban and natural forests, emphasizing the importance of green spaces and trees in urban environments.

The local government attributes this green seal to substantial investments in urban greening and the restoration of mangrove ecosystems. These efforts not only aim to improve environmental quality but also bring economic and social advantages as Cubatão develops policies for tree cultivation and the expansion of green areas. During this edition, 51 cities across Brazil received similar certifications, illustrating a national trend towards urban environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Cubatão's journey from a pollution-heavy industrial hub to a recognized model of environmental recovery highlights the city's successful implementation of strict environmental control programs. This transformation serves as inspiration for other cities grappling with industrial pollution, showing that comprehensive policies and community engagement can yield significant positive changes in urban environments.
