Three European bison killed in collision with train

A collision between an Intercity train and a group of European bison in Podlasie, Poland, resulted in the death of three animals but no injuries to the train passengers.

In a tragic incident in Podlasie, Poland, an Intercity train, designated as IC 1116/7 "Żubr", collided with a group of European bison who were standing on the tracks. The accident took place in the village of Kraskowszczyzna early in the morning, around 8 AM, leading to the untimely deaths of three adult bison. Fortunately, the 52 passengers onboard the train and the three crew members were unharmed, and the train was able to continue its journey after a brief technical check shortly after the incident.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, involving two fire brigades, police, and personnel from the Polish State Railways as well as the Białowieża National Park and the Bielsk Forest District. This incident raises important questions about wildlife management and the safety of both animals and train operations in areas where their habitats intersect, particularly in regions like Podlasie, known for its rich biodiversity and presence of European bison.

The regional wildlife authorities will likely conduct an evaluation of the circumstances leading to this collision to prevent future occurrences. The presence of European bison, which are a protected species in Poland, highlights the need for better infrastructure or measures to ensure their safety and that of rail passengers, as well as the conservation of their natural habitats in proximity to modern transportation systems.
