Hunting, logging, and construction above Starina could drive Slovakia's only wild bison into Poland
Proposed changes to a significant portion of the Poloniny National Park could threaten the survival of Slovakia's only wild bison population, as they may be forced to migrate to Poland due to increased human activities.
Recent proposals by Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba's nominees to change a large part of the Poloniny National Park to a low-protection zone raise concerns over the future of Slovakia's only population of wild European bison, or zubor hrivnatý. This area, located near the Starina water reservoir, is unique as it is the only site in Slovakia where these bison live freely. The decision to establish this population over 20 years ago was based on the area's low human disturbance, making it suitable for the bison's habitation. With the proposed changes, the habitat that was carefully preserved could be subjected to construction, logging, and hunting.
