Goodbye to Brick: The New Ecological Material That Allows Building a House in 5 Days

A Colombian company has developed a system to build houses quickly and sustainably using recycled plastic bricks.

The construction industry is searching for more sustainable methods to minimize its environmental impact. In this context, a Colombian company named Conceptos Plásticos has innovated a system that transforms recycled plastics into bricks, enabling the construction of houses in less than a week, more rapidly and economically than traditional methods. Founded by architect Oscar Andrés Méndez and engineer Isabel Cristina Gámez, the company focuses on turning waste materials such as bags, containers, and bottles into modular bricks and columns.

The process begins with the collection of plastics sourced from recyclers and industrial waste. The collected material is melted and shaped into bricks, which resemble Lego pieces. Each block weighs around three kilos, similar to traditional bricks, but they have a distinct feature: they interlock using a pressure mechanism. This design enables quick and straightforward assembly of structures, significantly reducing the time usually required for construction.

The implications of this innovation extend beyond mere speed and cost. By utilizing recycled plastic for construction, the approach significantly contributes to reducing plastic waste and provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional building materials. Moreover, this method could potentially transform housing development in areas that face challenges in traditional building methods, making sustainable living more accessible to a wider population, especially in developing regions.
