In the face of soaring costs for traditional construction materials like cement and bricks, building a home has become increasingly unattainable for the average person in India. To address this crisis, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has unveiled a groundbreaking solution with its 'fly ash' model housing, named 'Sukh'. This eco-friendly house was showcased at the India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, featuring a 300 square foot design that accommodates essential living spaces such as a bedroom, drawing room, bathroom, and kitchen.

Notably, the construction of this house amounts to just ₹1.5 lakhs and can be completed in a mere 15 to 20 days. One of the model's remarkable attributes is that it does not require conventional materials like cement, sand, or rebar. Instead, it is constructed using interlocking blocks that are 80% comprised of fly ash—a byproduct from coal combustion. This innovation not only provides an economical alternative for housing but also enhances resilience, making the structure impervious to earthquakes and adverse weather conditions.

The introduction of such sustainable and cost-effective housing models could significantly alter the landscape of home construction in India. As upward of 70% of shopping malls are failing in the country, solutions like this highlight a shift towards more practical and financially viable living arrangements. This approach may ultimately help to improve housing access for low and middle-income families, enabling them to build durable homes without the heavy financial burden of traditional construction methods.
