Ex-deputy governor candidate warns of looming defections in Bayelsa APC
Great MacIver, a former deputy governorship candidate, has warned of potential defections from the Bayelsa State chapter of the APC due to internal injustices.
Great MacIver, who was the deputy governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State during the 2023 elections, has raised alarms regarding possible defections within the party. He claims that there are unresolved issues and perceived injustices regarding how the party is currently managed, stating that a lack of action may lead to significant losses of key stakeholders after upcoming primaries. MacIver's concerns are particularly focused on how the party has functioned since the involvement of the state governor, Douye Diri, which he suggests has exacerbated tensions and disparities.
In his statement titled ‘Bayelsa APC Congresses: Going Forward, a Call to Look Inwards,’ MacIver elaborates on the internal divisions within the APC in Bayelsa State, emphasizing the existence of two political blocs prior to the governor's involvement. He highlights that one of these blocs represents the majority with a ratio of about 95 percent, while the other is a minority comprising approximately 5 percent. This fundamental imbalance, according to MacIver, is indicative of unfairness within party leadership and decision-making processes.
MacIver's warning serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing struggles within the APC in Bayelsa, suggesting that without immediate reform and consideration of all party members' interests, the party may face a crisis of loyalty among its ranks. Such defections could severely undermine the APC's position moving forward, affecting not only the dynamics within the party but also its electoral prospects in upcoming elections, warranting urgent attention from party leadership to avert this potential fallout.
