Zelensky: Weakening of sanctions provides Russia with additional resources for war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the weakening of sanctions has allowed Russia to boost its oil revenues, which are being used to finance its war against Ukraine.
In a statement on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the detrimental effects of weakened sanctions on Russia's war efforts. He noted that recent actions allow Russia to significantly increase its revenue from oil exports, which is being funneled directly into financing its military operations against Ukraine. Zelensky highlighted that within just the past week, Russia launched a massive attack involving nearly 1550 drones, more than 1260 guided bombs, and two missiles, showcasing the scale and intensity of its military campaign.
The president made it clear that the financial gains from oil sales foster a sense of impunity for Russia, providing it with the means to continue its aggression against Ukraine. He called for an increase in international pressure on Russia and stressed the need for effective sanctions, particularly concerning the so-called 'shadow fleet'—tanker ships used to evade restrictions. Zelensky’s remarks underscore the importance of collective international efforts in ensuring that these vessels do not operate freely in European and other waters, as doing so would further enable Russia's war capabilities.
Zelensky's call to action serves as a reminder of the crucial role that economic sanctions play in international security and the necessity for global unity against aggressors. His appeal to partners to block such ships emphasizes the ongoing need for vigilance and coordinated responses to mitigate the effectiveness of Russian military funding, which remains directly linked to its capacity to wage war against Ukraine.
