Verlin once again threatened the Estonian record and reached the semifinals at the World Championships
Kreete Verlin secured a spot in the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles at the Indoor Athletics World Championships in Torun, Poland, just shy of breaking the Estonian record.
Kreete Verlin competed at the Indoor World Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland, where she narrowly missed breaking the Estonian record in the 60-meter hurdles. Running in the first heat, Verlin finished with a time of 7.97 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second slower than her own record set earlier in February in Madrid. This impressive performance placed her third in her heat, ensuring her direct qualification to the evening semifinals of the event.
The competition in the women's hurdles is exceptionally fierce, as evidenced by the timings of the heats. The last qualifying runner for the semifinals, Canada's Sienna MacDonald, clocked 8.03 seconds, with 21 out of 24 semifinalists completing their heats in under 8 seconds. Verlin's performance solidifies her reputation as a top contender in the event, especially as she ranks as the 17th fastest overall among a highly competitive field.
The semifinals for the women's 60-meter hurdles are set to take place on Sunday at 19:51. In other events, the women's long jump saw no athletes surpass the seven-meter mark, with Agate De Sousa from Portugal winning gold with a jump of 6.92 meters. This championship continues to showcase the extraordinary talents of athletes from around the world, with Verlin's results likely to inspire further interest in athletics back home in Estonia.
