Sudan: Many Dead in Airstrike on Hospital
An airstrike on a hospital in Sudan has resulted in numerous fatalities, including children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In Sudan, a tragic airstrike on a medical facility has been reported, resulting in significant casualties, as stated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The attack occurred in the East Darfur region and targeted a teaching hospital, leading to the reported deaths of at least 64 individuals, including 13 children, along with many injuries. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced these details via X, underlining the humanitarian impact of such violence.
This attack compounds the already dire situation in Sudan, which has been embroiled in a power struggle since April 2023. Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto leader, is fighting against his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has significant influence in Darfur, while the Sudanese army maintains control in other regions such as the east, center, and north, indicating a deeply fractured military and political landscape.
The identity of the assailants remains unclear, with WHO's Tedros not attributing responsibility. However, the Sudanese NGO Emergency Lawyers claims that the Sudanese army conducted the drone strike. This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of medical facilities and the protection of civilians in conflict zones, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and humanitarian assistance in the region.
