War in Sudan: WHO: More than 60 dead in attack on hospital in East Darfur

The World Health Organization reports that over 60 people were killed in an airstrike on a hospital in East Darfur, Sudan, including children and medical staff.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has escalated with a recent airstrike on a teaching hospital in East Darfur, resulting in at least 64 fatalities, including 13 children. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on social media. In addition to those killed, there were at least 89 reported injuries, affecting both patients and medical personnel within the facility.

This tragic event highlights the increasing danger faced by medical institutions and personnel amid the intensifying violence in Sudan. The WHO has been raising concerns about the impacts of the conflict on health services, emphasizing that civilian facilities should be protected during such hostilities. The airstrike's targeting of a healthcare facility points to a significant violation of international humanitarian laws, which mandate the protection of medical facilities and their staff during armed conflicts.

As investigations into the attack continue, there is an urgent call for accountability to prevent further atrocities in the region. The international community is urged to take action to ensure the safety of civilians and to facilitate humanitarian assistance in areas affected by conflict, as ongoing violence continues to destabilize the region and threaten the lives of countless individuals.
