More than 50 cities in Piauí show decrease in rainfall compared to January 2025
Fifty-five cities in Piauí have recorded a decrease in average rainfall for January 2026 compared to January 2025, according to the state's Secretary of Environment and Water Resources.
In January 2026, fifty-five municipalities in the state of Piauí, Brazil, have experienced a decrease in average rainfall compared to the same month in 2025. The Secretary of Environment and Water Resources of Piauí (Semarh-PI) conducted this assessment using data from the state's network of rain observers and climate conditions. The reported reductions vary significantly from city to city, highlighting an inconsistent pattern across the region.
Among the cities noted for having the largest declines are Alto Longá, Castelo do Piauí, and Boqueirão do Piauí, which experienced significant drops in their average rainfall of -269.30 mm, -259.40 mm, and -251.20 mm respectively. In contrast, the cities with the least reduction include Parnaíba, Assunção do Piauí, and Miguel Alves, which reported minimal changes of -10.30 mm, -6.00 mm, and -0.70 mm, indicating that while some areas faced severe declines, others remained relatively stable.
The analysis conducted by Semarh is crucial for understanding climate trends in Piauí, particularly regarding agricultural planning and water resource management. Effective monitoring of these changes is vital for preparing local communities for potential drought conditions and ensuring sustainable resource use in the future.
