Sixteen-Year-Old from Ceará is the Only Woman Among Brazilians Qualified for International Physics Olympiads
Maria Beatriz Mesquita Ximenes, a 16-year-old from Ceará, is the sole female member of Brazil's contingent for the upcoming International Physics Olympiads in 2026.
Maria Beatriz Mesquita Ximenes, a 16-year-old student from Ceará, stands out as the only female participant among the Brazilian students selected to represent the country in the prestigious international competitions of Physics in 2026. Known as Mabe, she earned one of the four spots for the Ibero-American Physics Olympiad (OIbF) this year. Her journey began at the age of 14 when she moved to Fortaleza to live with her aunt in search of better academic opportunities and enhanced support from her school as she prepared for international competitions.
Mabe's dedication is evident in her rigorous daily routine, which often involves spending nearly 14 hours a day at school, including up to 11 classes on some days. A significant portion of this time is devoted to specialized training for physics Olympiads, where she practices solving problems similar to those that will be on the actual exams. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed, as she has also received a full scholarship to her school, allowing her to focus on her studies and competitions.
As the only woman in a highly competitive field, Mabe's achievements shine a spotlight on the need for greater female representation in science and mathematics. Her success not only serves as an inspiration for young women in Brazil but also emphasizes the importance of providing adequate resources and support to aspiring female scientists. As she prepares for the upcoming Olympiad, Mabe represents hope and potential for future generations in STEM fields in Brazil.
