European Commission: Fill Your Gas Storage

The European Commission urges member states to fill their gas storage early to prevent competition for supplies and rising prices amid geopolitical tensions.

The European Commission's energy commissioner has advised member states to begin filling their gas storage facilities early to avoid competition for resources that could drive up prices. Commissioner Dan JΓΈrgensen emphasized that governments should aim to fill their gas storage to 80% and take advantage of flexibility provisions provided under EU law. This is crucial as rising gas prices were reported, with increases attributed to ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East affecting key infrastructure.

On a recent Thursday, gas prices in Europe soared by up to 35% due to escalating tensions and attacks targeting significant gas facilities in the region, particularly in relation to events involving Iran and Israel. The market conditions are precarious, as nations are advised to ramp up their gas reserves ahead of a December 1st deadline. The 80% target for storage can be adjusted, allowing for deviations of up to 10 percentage points due to unfavorable market conditions, and an additional 5% under extreme circumstances.

Previously, it was reported that spring and summer are critical for gas storage in Europe; however, current military actions in the Persian Gulf are posing a significant threat to these efforts. The urgency to secure adequate gas supplies is amplified by the fear of prolonged damage to vital infrastructure that could take years to repair. Ensuring robust gas stockpiles will not only stabilize prices but also secure energy needs during the upcoming winter months.
