EU: 'Fill the natural gas storage now' - Commission's warning to the 27

The European Union urges member states to quickly fill their natural gas storage facilities due to concerns about rising competition and prices resulting from the crisis fueled by the conflict in Iran.

The European Union has issued a strong recommendation for its member states to prioritize the immediate filling of natural gas storage facilities. This directive comes in light of the energy crisis exacerbated by tensions arising from the war in Iran, which threatens to lead to increased competition and potentially soaring prices in the upcoming months. Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has addressed European governments, urging them to begin the filling process sooner rather than later to alleviate pressure on the market during the summer period.

In his communication, Jørgensen emphasized that taking proactive measures now could help mitigate competition for LNG shipments and help contain costs. He also laid out a framework for more flexible storage filling targets, proposing a primary goal of 80% capacity, with allowances for variations of ±10 percentage points, and an additional 5 percentage points during challenging market conditions. The deadline for achieving these targets remains set for December 1.

Despite the urgency of this situation, Jørgensen has reassured that the supply security for the EU remains stable for the time being. However, the call to action reflects significant concerns about the market's balance amidst ongoing geopolitical instabilities, highlighting the EU's preparedness to navigate potential future crises effectively.
