JOHESU decries delay in FG’s committee on salary review

The President of the Joint Health Sector Unions has criticized the Nigerian government for the delay in resuming a committee tasked with reviewing health workers' salaries and agreements.

Kabiru Minjibir, the National President of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), expressed serious concerns regarding the delay in implementing crucial agreements that impact health workers in Nigeria. He highlighted that a government committee, established to review salary adjustments and oversee the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), has been inactive since October of the previous year, despite the committee's critical mandate. Minjibir pointed out that this stalling hampers necessary progress in addressing health sector issues.

The committee, which falls under the purview of the Federal Ministry of Health, is chaired by the Minister of Labour, Muhammadu Dingyadi. Its original purpose was to tackle the pressing issues concerning the CBA as well as adjustments under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). The lack of activity and communication from the government regarding the resumption of this committee is causing frustration within the health workforce, leading to unrest and concerns about health service delivery in Nigeria.

Addressing the situation is of utmost importance as delays in salary adjustments can exacerbate dissatisfaction among health workers and threaten the overall efficiency of Nigeria's health services. This situation indicates deeper systemic issues related to governance and the prioritization of health sector needs. As health workers advocate for their rights, the government's response to these concerns will be crucial in maintaining stability within the health sector and ensuring that healthcare delivery is not compromised.
