JOHESU threatens fresh strike if implementation fails by April

The Joint Health Sector Unions in Nigeria has warned of a potential strike if salary adjustments agreed upon with the Federal Government are not implemented by April.

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) in Nigeria have issued a warning regarding a potential nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to implement previously agreed salary adjustments by April. This announcement was made by Dr. Bassey Icha, the chairman of JOHESU in Cross River State, during an interview in Calabar. The warning comes in the wake of JOHESU's recent suspension of a strike that started on November 15, 2025, and ended on February 6, following agreements reached in congresses held by union members.

Dr. Icha highlighted that the primary driver of the previous strike was the lack of review of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure, which has not been adjusted since its introduction in 2009. In contrast, doctors under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure have received numerous adjustments over the years, leading to significant disparities in pay within the health sector. He emphasized that JOHESU is not seeking equal pay with doctors but rather a fair review based on existing government salary structures to address these gaps.

The implications of this warning are significant, as it not only reflects ongoing tensions between health workers and the government but also raises concerns about the stability of healthcare services in Nigeria. If the Federal Government fails to address the demands of JOHESU, there could be serious disruptions in healthcare delivery across the nation, affecting the health outcomes of countless citizens who rely on public health services.
