Israeli actions in Lebanon will lead to civil war, says expert
An expert warns that Israel's military actions in Lebanon could ignite a civil war as tensions rise amid ongoing conflicts involving Hezbollah and Iran.
In response to the war instigated by the United States and Israel against Iran, the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, an ally of Tehran, has attacked the Jewish state, resulting in a new Israeli invasion of Lebanon and continuous bombings since. The conflict has already led to the deaths of over a thousand people, according to the Lebanese government in Beirut, and has displaced nearly one million Lebanese, about 20% of the country's population of 5.8 million.
According to Yezid Sayigh, a Palestinian intellectual based in Beirut and a member of the Carnegie Middle East Center, the destruction and chaos caused by Israeli actions may provoke a new civil war in Lebanon. He elaborates in a recent telephone interview with Folha that the ongoing warfare intensifies sectarian tensions in Lebanon and suggests that Israel should not merely aim for the disarmament of Hezbollah.
As residents of Beirut experience the constant bombardment, the impact on daily life is significant, with many feeling the pressure of an escalating conflict. The ramifications of this situation extend beyond immediate violence, as the potential for deeper sectarian divides looms over the country, urging the international community to recognize the precarious nature of Lebanese stability in light of these developments.
