Allowing Direct Landfilling of Household Waste During Maintenance Period of Public Incineration Facilities
The Korean authorities have permitted the direct landfilling of household waste at the Seoul metropolitan landfill during the maintenance period of public incineration facilities to reduce reliance on private waste disposal services.
The Korean government, alongside the municipalities of Incheon, Seoul, and Gyeonggi-do, has decided to allow the direct landfilling of household waste at the metropolitan landfill during the maintenance period of public incineration facilities. This measure is in response to concerns over escalating reliance on private waste management services due to the prohibition of direct landfilling that was established earlier this year. The operational committee has granted a specific exception allowing 163,000 tons of waste to be directly landfilled, which amounts to approximately 31% of the average annual direct landfilling in the region over the past three years. Each city has a designated limit for this exception: 82,335 tons for Seoul, 35,566 tons for Incheon, and 45,415 tons for Gyeonggi-do.
