Sudan: Dr. Tedros Condemns Attack on Sudan Hospital, Calls for De-escalation and Civilian Protections
Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus of the WHO has condemned a recent attack on Al Deain Teaching Hospital in Sudan, which resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.
Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has strongly condemned the recent deadly attack on Al Deain Teaching Hospital located in East Darfur's capital. The assault has resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, including 13 children, two female nurses, and one male doctor. This tragic incident brings the total death toll from attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan during the ongoing conflict to over 2,000, underlining the severe impact of violence on health services in the region.
The WHO reports that since the beginning of the near three-year conflict, there have been 213 confirmed attacks on healthcare, leading to 2,036 fatalities and numerous injuries, including 89 in this latest attack. The destruction of key hospital departments such as pediatrics, maternity, and emergency services will have profound implications for the already desperate community needing medical assistance. The WHO stresses that these events are not just statistics but signify the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.
Dr. Tedros has called for immediate de-escalation measures and stronger protection for civilians and health facilities in conflict zones. The ongoing violence jeopardizes not only immediate medical care but also the long-term healthcare infrastructure required to support vulnerable populations. Without urgent international attention and action, the situation in Sudan is likely to deteriorate further, with devastating consequences for the health and safety of its residents.
