Group beats capybara with sticks in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro
A group of at least eight individuals attacked a capybara with sticks and metal bars in Rio de Janeiro, leading to the arrest of six adults and two minors suspected of the crime.
In a shocking incident that occurred early Saturday morning in Jardim Guanabara, located in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, a group of eight individuals brutally assaulted a capybara using sticks and iron bars. Security footage captured the group surrounding the animal in the street, where one member delivered a hard blow, prompting others to join in the assault. The capybara was later seen unsteadily roaming the streets, highlighting the severity of the attack.
After the incident, local authorities responded promptly, with police arresting six adult suspects and detaining two adolescents believed to be involved in the attack. The capybara was rescued by agents from the municipal Secretariat of the Environment and the Secretariat for Animal Protection and Defense. It was transported to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Vargem Pequena, southwest of Rio de Janeiro, for treatment and recovery, underscoring the cityβs efforts to protect its wildlife.
The Civil Police have stated that the six adults will face charges of animal abuse, criminal association, and corruption of minors, while the two minors will be held accountable for analogous offenses. This incident has sparked a discussion about the treatment of animals in urban environments and the responsibilities of citizens towards wildlife protection, as well as the need for stricter measures against such acts of cruelty in Brazil.
