Clean cooking could slash Nigeria’s healthcare costs – New study

A new international study suggests that adopting clean cooking energy in Nigeria can lead to significant savings in healthcare costs and better respiratory health.

A recent study led by researchers from the United Kingdom and Nigeria highlights the potential benefits of switching to clean cooking fuels in Nigeria. Conducted as part of the C2REST Nigeria Study, the research indicates that adopting cleaner energy sources such as gas and electricity can reduce household healthcare expenditures while improving health outcomes. This comes against the backdrop of Nigeria's healthcare system, which faces significant pressure due to prevalent respiratory diseases linked to traditional cooking methods.

Fieldwork for the study was carried out in two urban areas of Nigeria, specifically Alimosho in Lagos State and Ado-Odo/Ota in Ogun State. These locations were selected to represent typical conditions of both urban and peri-urban households in Nigeria. The findings suggest that while the initial investment in cleaner cooking technologies may be higher, the long-term benefits, including fewer illnesses and lesser healthcare costs, can provide substantial savings for families.

The research advocates for a shift in cooking practices across Nigeria, positioning clean cooking not only as a means to enhance public health but also as a necessary measure for economic resilience. With growing urban populations and health care demands, this study calls for policy change and investment in clean energy solutions to support healthier communities and alleviate the strain on the healthcare system.
