Inmates at HMP New Hall, home to serial killer Rose West, have echoed their frustrations about the prison's food quality, describing it as excessively rich in carbohydrates. A recent report highlighted that prisoners moved from other facilities have voiced concerns about the unhealthy offerings, primarily consisting of chips, pies, and pizza, which they believe are contributing to unwanted weight gain. The Independent Monitoring Board noted these complaints while carrying out inspections at the facility, emphasizing the impact of diet on the inmates' wellbeing.

In response to these dietary concerns, prison officials have initiated efforts to promote healthier eating. The catering manager at HMP New Hall has been tasked with creating more nutritionally balanced meals, which include the introduction of dishes such as Buddha Bowls, featuring vegetarian components like brown rice, quinoa, vegetables, chickpeas, and tofu. This shift aims to improve the nutrition available to inmates, who have expressed a desire for meals that are both healthier and more satisfying.

Despite these changes, complaints from the inmates persist, with many claiming that the meals are still too heavy and high in calories. This ongoing dissatisfaction suggests that while the prison administration is making efforts to enhance the diet of inmates, there is still significant work to be done to align the food provided with the health needs and preferences of the incarcerated individuals at HMP New Hall.
