The thrilling season finale brought a crystal globe to Pirovano
Italian skier Laura Pirovano won the final speed skiing event of the World Cup season and claimed a small crystal globe overall.
Laura Pirovano, an Italian alpine skier, achieved a remarkable victory at the final speed skiing event of the World Cup season held in Kvitfjell, Norway. Pirovano, who had a slow start to the season, surged to success in March when she secured two speed events in her home region of Val di Fassa before completing the season with this crucial win. This victory not only marked her first wins of the season but also earned her a small crystal globe, signifying her overall victory in the speed skiing classification.
In the decisive race in Kvitfjell, Pirovano clocked a time of 1:30.85, edging out Olympic champion Breezy Johnson from the USA by a mere 0.15 seconds, with Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann finishing third, 0.25 seconds behind. Pirovano’s performance throughout the season was impressive, earning her a total of 536 points across nine events, significantly outpacing her closest competitor, Emma Aicher of Germany, by 83 points. Aicher finished the final race in fifth place, further solidifying Pirovano's dominance in the speed skiing category.
The success of Pirovano is a notable milestone for Italian skiing, particularly as she navigated a challenging season before peaking at the right moment. With this win and the accompanying globe, she has positioned herself as a formidable presence for future competitions, indicating her potential to uphold Italian skiing's reputation on the world stage. The men’s event was also noteworthy, with Dominik Paris from Italy seizing the final race title, demonstrating the strength of Italian competitors in this year’s skiing circuit.
