Foreign Minister Valtonen to YLE: Finland will not send equipment to the Strait of Hormuz

Finland will not participate in military operations in the Persian Gulf or send equipment to the Strait of Hormuz, according to Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.

Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has made it clear that Finland will not take part in military operations in the Persian Gulf nor send equipment to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Valtonen emphasized during an interview with YLE that Finland, along with partner nations, is assessing the most effective way to contribute should military actions cease, suggesting that involvement might be limited to staff officer capabilities. This implies a cautious approach to engagement in international military conflicts.

Valtonen also highlighted that Finland has significant defense needs of its own and obligations related to NATO’s defense plans, as well as ensuring stability in the Baltic Sea region. She pointed out that the participation of NATO countries alongside the United States in the war is not under consideration for Finland, indicating a careful balancing act in navigating international military alliances while maintaining national interests.

Furthermore, President Alexander Stubb announced that Finland has joined a statement regarding the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. This statement condemns recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and efforts to disrupt maritime trade, calling upon all nations to respect international law and work towards international security. This diplomatic stance underscores Finland's commitment to upholding international norms while clearly delineating its position on military involvement in the region.
