Heat, Sedentary Lifestyle, and High-Salt Diet Increase Body Swelling; Learn How to Avoid It

In São Paulo, high temperatures and sedentary behavior contribute to increased body swelling, prompting health experts to recommend lifestyle changes for prevention.

As autumn arrives in São Paulo, the high temperatures continue to affect residents, leading to various health symptoms including headaches and dizziness, along with a common issue of increased body swelling. This is primarily due to the dilation of blood vessels, which facilitates blood flow to cool the body but also encourages fluid retention in the body's extremities, as explained by vascular surgeon Rafael Noronha Cavalcante from Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz.

The situation can worsen for individuals with a sedentary lifestyle, particularly those who remain inactive for extended periods. According to Cavalcante, gravity hinders the return of venous blood, and the calf muscles, activated during walking, play a critical role in promoting this flow. The lack of movement can thus exacerbate swelling by impairing blood circulation, leading to more discomfort.

Moreover, the doctor warns that a diet high in salt and excessive alcohol consumption intensify fluid retention in the body, making it vital for individuals, especially older adults, to adopt healthier eating and exercise habits. Addressing these lifestyle factors could significantly mitigate the risk of swelling, particularly during warmer seasons.
