Destruction of Latvian railway objects in the interests of Russia: two young men caused damage amounting to 372,014 euros

Two Latvian citizens have been charged with malicious arson of railway infrastructure aimed at benefitting Russian interests, leading to significant financial damage.

In early March, the Latvian State Security Service (VDD) initiated legal proceedings against two individuals for the deliberate arson of railway infrastructure in Latvia, allegedly to further Russian interests. According to the Prosecutor's Office, these two men, born in 2006 and 1999, are facing criminal charges under two sections of the Penal Code, specifically for aiding a foreign state in actions against another country and for intentional destruction and damage to alien property.

The charges detail how the accused used fuel-filled plastic bottles to douse and ignite critical railway components, including a railway relay cabinet, lighting distribution cabinet, and a diesel locomotive. It was reported that one of the accused acted independently with pre-prepared fuel bottles to set a relay cabinet ablaze during the incidents. Overall, there were five separate acts of arson committed at various locations, with three of those involving coordinated efforts between the individuals.

This situation not only raises concerns about national security and infrastructure safety in Latvia but also highlights the ongoing tensions related to Russian influence in the region. The significant financial impact of 372,014 euros due to these acts of vandalism reflects the potential dangers posed by such deliberate actions, which threaten not just local assets but also the broader stability in the context of international relations.
