Documents and data carriers from Belgium received in the Ždanoka case by the VDD

The State Security Service (VDD) of Latvia has received documents and data carriers from the Belgian police related to former MEP Tatjana Ždanoka's residence in Brussels, following a court ruling rejecting her appeal.

The State Security Service (VDD) confirmed that it received documents and data carriers from the Belgian police at the end of February, in connection with a search conducted at the apartment of Tatjana Ždanoka, a former Member of the European Parliament, in Brussels. This action took place following a Belgian court's rejection of Ždanoka's appeal regarding the legality of the search, which was carried out on November 7, 2024, based on a legal assistance request from the VDD. As a result, the VDD is now conducting a thorough analysis of the seized materials to further their investigation.

Tatjana Ždanoka is under investigation for her alleged collaboration with Russian intelligence services, which has generated considerable controversy and media attention. The legal proceedings against her stem from a broader investigation regarding activities perceived as a threat to national security. The VDD previously designated Ždanoka as a suspect, signifying the severity of the allegations leveled against her.

In light of these developments, the VDD refrained from providing additional comments, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. This case raises significant questions about surveillance, governance, and the intersection of politics with national security in Latvia, particularly against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Baltic region with Russia's actions on the international stage.
