KNAB case involving the disclosure of undisclosed information in an IT procurement includes the State Secretary of VARAM Balševics
The KNAB is investigating a case involving the potential disclosure of undisclosed information by two state officials linked to IT procurements, with the State Secretary of VARAM implicated.
The KNAB (Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau) has confirmed that it conducted procedural criminal activities in Riga on Tuesday concerning a case initiated on March 11, 2026, related to the suspected disclosure of undisclosed information. The investigation centers on two public officials who allegedly shared sensitive information with a businessman. Although this information is not classified as state secrets, it is considered limited-access information related to IT procurements across various state institutions.
According to information available to Latvian Television, the investigation involves the State Secretary of VARAM (the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development) and an official from the State Digital Development Agency, as well as a businessman. It has been reported that Balševics, the State Secretary, has not been prohibited from carrying out his official duties, raising questions about the implications of this case on his position and responsibilities.
The Criminal Law provides for accountability for such offenses in Article 329, which addresses the disclosure of non-confidential undisclosed information by a public official who has been warned about the consequences. This case underscores the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive governmental operations and raises broader concerns regarding transparency and accountability in public procurement processes in Latvia.
