Names Given to Six Nameless Streets in Vilnius, Four Named After Female Artists

Six streets in Vilnius have been renamed, with four bearing the names of female artists.

The Vilnius city council has recently made significant changes to the naming of several streets in the city. Four unnamed streets in the Paneriai district have been officially named after notable female artists: Kazimiera Zimblytė, Marija Račkauskaitė, Veronika Šleivytė, and Lidija Meškaitytė. This move is aimed at honoring the contributions of these artists in Lithuanian culture, providing them recognition in a public space.

Additionally, the Naujininkai district has seen two streets renamed to reflect historical regions - Kretinga and Skuodas, which connect local history to the urban landscape. Meanwhile, in Antakalnis, a significant change was made to Gvazdikų Sodų 1-oji Street, which has now been renamed to Bliuzo Street. Such changes are part of a broader initiative to celebrate and maintain cultural heritage within urban settings.

The council also approved the cancellation of names for Skitų streets in Naujoji Vilnia and Karigailos Street in Verkiai. These decisions will lead to updates in address data, necessitating administrative processes for the assignment and alteration of these street names, which will be incorporated into the Address Register. The changes reflect an ongoing effort to ensure that the naming of public spaces is aligned with contemporary values and cultural recognition.
