Namibia: Five People Die in Car Crash Between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo, One Survivor
A car crash between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo in Namibia resulted in the deaths of five people, with one survivor seriously injured.
A tragic car accident occurred on Thursday evening at 18:00 between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo, where five individuals lost their lives. The Otjozondjupa regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that a motorist driving a grey sedan swerved to avoid guinea fowls on the road, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming double cab bakkie. The collision was so severe that both vehicles caught fire on impact, complicating the aftermath of the accident.
Eyewitness reports included the brave actions of other motorists who pulled the driver of the bakkie from the burning wreck, thus saving his life. However, all the occupants in the sedan were tragically burned beyond recognition. The driver of the bakkie, a 53-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and is currently being treated at a private hospital in Okahandja. As investigations continue, the local police have urged the public to contact them if they have relatives who were travelling from Windhoek to Otjiwarongo and have not arrived at their destination.
This incident highlights the ongoing issues related to road safety in Namibia, especially concerning wildlife on the roads. Authorities are likely to emphasize the importance of vigilance while driving in rural areas and may consider further measures to prevent similar tragic incidents in the future. The local community is also left to mourn the loss of life, and police are working to notify the next of kin of the deceased as investigations into the crash continue.
