Prosecutor: Possible bribery of a representative of the defense system related to building repairs
A prosecutor in Lithuania reported possible bribery involving a representative from the defense system connected to a building repair contract.
D. Valkavičius, who led the pre-trial investigation, stated that the case does not involve military equipment or similar devices. The Special Investigation Service (STT), which conducted the pre-trial investigation, along with the prosecutor's office overseeing the process, disclosed details about the bribery case. According to the case files, the accused, a shareholder of a construction company, provided a bribe exceeding 3,000 euros to a person comparable to a public servant in December of last year, acting in the company's interests.
The gathered evidence suggests that the bribe was given to secure favorable consideration from the public servant regarding the company's construction work evaluated under a public procurement contract with the Ministry of National Defense (KAM), which amounted to over 1.287 million euros. This incident raises serious ethical concerns regarding the integrity of public procurement processes and the accountability of related officials.
The emergence of such cases highlights systemic issues within Lithuania's defense sector regarding transparency and accountability. Reports of bribery in public procurement can damage trust in government institutions, necessitating stricter oversight and preventive measures to safeguard against corruption, especially in defense-related expenditures.
