"9 Found By The Gym Window, DNA Analysis"... Likely Unable to Escape Fire on the 3rd Floor
Nine out of ten victims of a factory fire in Daejeon were discovered near a gym window on the third floor, prompting police to initiate DNA tests for identification.
On the 20th, it was reported that nine of the ten victims of a factory fire in the Munpyeong-dong area of Daejeon were found deceased near a gym window on the third floor, complicating identification efforts. The police have commenced DNA analysis for this purpose. Search operations continue for the remaining four missing individuals, with fire department officials indicating that they believe the last missing persons may be under collapsed debris in the parking area, which presents a significant risk for further collapses. Therefore, they plan to conduct safety assessments before initiating demolition work to continue the search.
During a briefing on the morning of the 21st, the Daejeon Fire Department revealed that they had searched all possible areas overnight and had discovered ten of the fourteen reported missing. The victims were predominantly located in the factory's main building, with one previously found near the staff lounge stairway on the second floor. Authorities described the tragic situation where, due to the sudden spread of flames and chaotic conditions, many employees had gathered in the dangerous area after finishing lunch, which likely contributed to the severity of the incident.
The fire broke out at approximately 1:17 PM, and initial investigations suggest a rapid expansion of the flames, corroborated by testimonies from rescued employees. Authorities are analyzing CCTV footage to understand the rate of the fireβs spread. Furthermore, the sodium, known to be explosive, was stored in a separate location, minimizing additional risks. As the region copes with this disaster, concerns are growing about the conditions of the 69 injured, with three in serious condition in intensive care following surgeries and others recovering from their injuries.
