INEC urges discipline in Ekiti, Osun polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Nigeria has called for discipline and accountability among staff and citizens as the country prepares for elections in Ekiti and Osun states.

The Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has emphasized the importance of discipline, integrity, and accountability among commission staff and the general public as the nation gears up for the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. This call to action comes during his 2026 Eid-el-Fitr message, where he highlighted the significance of the end of Ramadan as a period that encourages a commitment to credible electoral processes.

Prof. Amupitan described the forthcoming elections in Ekiti and Osun as vital tests for the country's democratic framework, particularly leading up to the crucial 2027 general elections. He stressed the need for more than 14,000 INEC staff nationwide to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct, asserting that professionalism and adherence to ethical standards are essential for the integrity of the electoral process.

Additionally, the INEC Chairman pointed out that the values promoted during Ramadan—patience, integrity, and empathy—are crucial virtues necessary for fostering electoral integrity as Nigeria approaches these important political milestones. He believes that upholding these principles will help instill confidence in the electoral process and ensure that the elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
