The Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has emphasized the necessity of intensifying voter education across the country. During a recent meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja, he highlighted that effective electoral policies are futile without a well-informed electorate who comprehends the voting process. This directive comes in light of the recent FCT Area Council elections and the bye-elections conducted in Kano and Rivers states.

Amupitan acknowledged that while there was a slight increase in voter turnout for the recent elections—rising from 9.4% in 2022 to approximately 15%—voter apathy continues to be a significant issue. He pointed out that over 239,000 voters participated in the elections, compared to 148,685 in the previous cycle. Despite this improvement, he stressed the need for further efforts to stimulate voter engagement and ensure that more citizens understand their role and rights within the electoral process.

This call for enhanced voter education is pivotal as Nigeria gears up for future elections, aiming to increase participation and strengthen the democratic process. The focus on education suggests that INEC is aware of the long-standing challenges associated with voter apathy and is seeking to address these inefficiencies by ensuring that citizens are better informed about the electoral procedures and the importance of their vote.
