PM sergeant and businessman arrested on suspicion of extortion and usury in Greater Natal

A police sergeant and a businessman were arrested in Brazil for alleged extortion and involvement in usury, following a substantial investigation by the Civil Police.

In a significant operation by the Civil Police of Brazil, a police sergeant and a businessman were arrested on accusations of extortion, usury, and criminal association. The arrests took place in the municipality of São José de Mipibu and the Lagoa Nova neighborhood in the southern zone of Natal, involving around 70 police officers in the operation. The identities of the suspects were not disclosed, but they are linked to ongoing investigations that have previously implicated the businessman in a major case that resulted in the freezing of over R$ 150 million from involved parties.

The allegations suggest that the businessman, who was already under investigation in Operation Amicis, resorted to threats and coercion aimed at other individuals who were also implicated in the ongoing cases to mitigate his financial losses. This operation was named "Última Ceia," or "Last Supper," and included the execution of four search and seizure warrants, alongside two arrest warrants, further demonstrating the breadth of the investigation into corruption and illegal financial practices in the region.

This development highlights critical concerns surrounding the integrity of law enforcement in Brazil, particularly in how individuals in positions of power can become entwined in criminal activities. The actions underscore the need for continued vigilance and reform within the police forces to prevent corruption and protect the public from exploitation and abuse of power.
