Zimbabwean MPs are calling for a ministerial statement from the Energy Minister in response to recent fuel price hikes, which have made fuel costs among the highest in the region.
Members of Parliament in Zimbabwe have expressed their concerns over a significant rise in fuel prices, prompting a demand for clarity from the Minister of Energy and Power Development, July Moyo. Recently, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) raised the prices of diesel to US$2.05 and petrol to US$2.17 per litre, attributing this surge to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has dramatically impacted global oil prices, pushing them to nearly US$120 per barrel.
The rising fuel costs have sparked outrage among lawmakers, particularly from Caston Matewu of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), who highlighted that Zimbabwe’s fuel prices are significantly higher than those of neighboring countries. During parliamentary discussions, Matewu emphasized the need for accountability and a comprehensive understanding of how the geopolitical situation is affecting local prices.
