The Parliament of Zimbabwe is requiring Energy Minister July Moyo to provide a ministerial statement in response to a recent increase in fuel prices across the country. As reported by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), diesel and petrol prices have surged to US$2.05 and US$2.17 per litre respectively. This increase is largely linked to escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has subsequently driven global oil prices to nearly US$120 per barrel, affecting fuel costs in Zimbabwe.

During a session in the National Assembly, Caston Matewu, a legislator from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), highlighted that Zimbabwe’s fuel prices are significantly higher than those in neighboring countries. He underscored the impact of the geopolitical crisis involving Iran, Israel, and the US, indicating that the fallout from these tensions has contributed to rising oil prices and, in turn, higher fuel costs in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

The call for transparency from lawmakers points to a growing concern among citizens regarding the affordability of fuel in Zimbabwe amidst economic challenges.
