USA: Easter egg prices will remain high despite falling cocoa prices
Easter egg prices in the USA are expected to stay elevated this year, despite a significant drop in cocoa prices over the past year.
Despite a notable decline in cocoa prices last year, the cost of chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies is projected to remain high in the United States this Easter. According to a report, retail prices have not decreased in line with falling cocoa futures, as manufacturers had previously purchased cocoa at higher rates and are working with existing inventories, which have not yet reflected the lower market price.
David Branth, a director at Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute, explained that many Easter chocolates were produced while cocoa was still expensive, causing retail prices to stay elevated. Consumers are now expected to face chocolate prices comparable to or slightly above Valentine's Day levels. It emphasizes how production and purchasing strategies can lead to disconnects between raw commodity prices and retail costs.
Furthermore, the futures prices for cocoa have decreased by more than 70% since reaching a record high in late 2024, thanks to the recovery in production and changes within the industry. These dynamics are crucial for consumers to understand, as they navigate spending on Easter treats amidst ongoing economic pressures.
