Turtle and dolphin found dead on São Luís beach raise environmental alert

A green turtle and a Sotalia guianensis dolphin were found dead on a beach in São Luís, prompting environmental concerns and highlighting the threats marine animals face.

On Friday, September 20, a green turtle and a Sotalia guianensis dolphin were discovered dead on the sand at Praia do Caolho in São Luís, Brazil. Lifeguards isolated the area following the discovery, and there are suggestions that the animals may have been positioned side by side by municipal workers cleaning the beach overnight. This incident raises significant concerns regarding the health of marine ecosystems in the region.

The monitoring of the turtle's removal will be conducted by Instituto Queamar, an organization that keeps track of marine animal strandings. The organization reported that approximately 400 marine species have washed ashore along Maranhão's coastline in the past two years, indicating a worrying trend. Biologist Viviane Araújo of Instituto Queamar emphasized that this region is vital feeding ground for juvenile marine species, which are increasingly threatened by factors such as fishing, pollution, and predators.

The death of these animals underscores the pressing environmental challenges facing marine life in Maranhão, which has significant ecological importance. The local community is urged to consider the impacts of human activities on these vulnerable species, as awareness and action are critical to mitigating further risks to marine biodiversity in the area.
