Don’t sideline members who laboured for ADC, ex-candidates urge leaders

Candidates of the African Democratic Congress in Nigeria are urging party leaders not to neglect those who helped build the party's foundation.

In a recent appeal, former candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nigeria have expressed their concerns regarding the direction of the party's leadership. They specifically addressed this issue in an open letter to the National Working Committee of the ADC, pleading for recognition of the contributions made by party members during the 2023 general elections. This call comes against the backdrop of what they describe as developments within the party that could undermine unity and stability.

The Secretary of Oredo Local Government in Edo State, Itiosa Omokaro, articulated the group's worry over prevailing practices of exclusion and injustice that are becoming evident in the party's operations. Omokaro, who also ran for office during the recent elections, emphasized that a political structure that marginalizes its active participants cannot sustain itself in the long term. This urgency for rectification highlights not just internal discord but also the potential impact on the party's electoral prospects in future elections.

The ex-candidates’ letter signifies a growing discontent within the ADC regarding how party members are treated, signalling that failure to address such grievances could lead to further fragmentation. Their warning underscores the critical need for inclusivity and due process within the party to ensure its viability and success in upcoming electoral contests, particularly in a politically charged environment like Nigeria’s.
