Quito registers a 26% decrease in suicides over the recent year and bets on strategies

Quito has seen a 26% reduction in suicide reports from 2024 to 2025, according to municipal health officials promoting community mental health initiatives.

In Quito, Ecuador, the municipality has reported a significant 26% decrease in suicides from 2024 to 2025, with suicides dropping from 244 in 2024 to 181 in 2025. This data was shared by Carlos Carvajal, the secretary of health, referencing statistics from the National Directorate of Crimes Against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion, and Kidnappings (Dinased). The municipality's health project is aimed at enhancing mental health strategies across communities, reflecting a broader commitment to addressing this urgent public health issue.

Mental health experts highlight that the reasons behind suicides are multifactorial—encompassing psychological, familial, social, and educational factors. Psychologist Jennifer Córdova emphasized that these issues often compound over time, likening the situation to a snowball effect that accumulates various problems. Therefore, a coordinated response involving multiple institutions and sectors is deemed essential for effective prevention.

The decrease in suicides can also be tied to increasing awareness and preventive measures spearheaded by local authorities. As Quito enhances its mental health initiatives, it demonstrates a proactive approach to mental health crises, stressing the importance of community engagement and institutional collaboration in tackling such complex social issues.
