Homicides fall by up to 55% in Guayaquil and the DMG during March
Intentional homicides have significantly decreased in Guayaquil and the surrounding district, according to the Interior Minister.
In March, intentional homicides in Guayaquil and its surrounding district, known as the DMG, saw a remarkable reduction, with reported decreases of 55% compared to prior months. Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, stated that this notable decline has been consistent with a 41% drop from February figures, underscoring a positive trend in crime statistics within the region. The decrease reflects efforts by law enforcement to tackle violence and criminal activities linked to narcotrafficking.
Reimberg highlighted that the drop in crime rates is not isolated to urban areas like Guayaquil, as the DMG area, which includes Samborondón and Durán, has similarly benefitted from decreased homicide rates, recording a 50% reduction in March. This comprehensive approach to tackling crime appears to be effective, with the Minister noting an overall 34% reduction in national homicide rates during the same period. In regions like Los Ríos and Manabí, a decrease in overall criminality has also been reported.
These developments indicate a potential turnaround in security in Ecuador, which has faced challenges with criminal violence in recent years, particularly related to drug trafficking. The government's renewed focus on dismantling drug trafficking organizations has been suggested as a critical factor contributing to the improved safety metrics. However, continuous monitoring and further efforts will be necessary to maintain and build on this positive trend in public safety and crime reduction.
