Africa: How Morocco Is Redrawing Africa's Avocado Trade Map

Morocco has emerged as Africa's leading avocado exporter in 2025, surpassing Kenya, following a significant increase in export volumes.

In 2025, Africa's avocado exports reached about 430,000 tonnes, marking a 16.7% increase from the previous year, largely driven by rising demand in European, Middle Eastern, and certain Asian markets. This growth has been greatly influenced by improved logistics, infrastructure, and market access, which are becoming just as critical as production levels. Morocco notably capitalized on these changes, achieving a remarkable 90% year-on-year increase in its avocado export volumes.

Morocco's success in the avocado market can be attributed to its strategic positioning and investments in agricultural infrastructure, allowing it to enhance its export capabilities. With approximately 141,000 tonnes of avocados exported in 2025, Morocco not only topped the continent for the first time but also demonstrated how logistics can shift market dynamics in the fruit trade.

Conversely, Kenya, once Africa’s leading avocado exporter, saw a decline in its export figures, falling to second place with an estimated 105,164 tonnes, representing a 19% drop. This shift underscores the competitive nature of agricultural commodities and highlights the need for ongoing improvements in supply chains to retain a leadership position in international markets.
