Africa: Morocco Becomes Africa's Top Arms Importer Amid Strains With Algeria - Report
Morocco has become Africa's leading importer of major weapons as it modernizes its military in the context of ongoing tensions with Algeria.
A recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) has highlighted Morocco's rise as Africa's top arms importer, reflecting a significant increase in military procurement aimed at modernizing its armed forces. Between 2021 and 2025, Morocco's major weapons imports saw a 12 percent increase compared to the preceding five-year period, amid escalating tensions with neighboring Algeria. Major weapons purchased by Morocco include advanced equipment such as armored vehicles, fighter jets, warships, and missile systems.
The report places Morocco at 28th worldwide in terms of arms imports, underscoring its strategic focus on enhancing military capabilities in a region characterized by sustained geopolitical strains, particularly with Algeria. In contrast, Algeria experienced a drastic 78 percent decrease in its arms imports during the same period, indicating a divergent military acquisition strategy between the two North African nations. This development could further exacerbate regional tensions, with Morocco's increasing military strength potentially provoking reactive measures from Algeria.
Moreover, Sipri has cautioned about the implications of such military build-ups in the region. Enhanced military capabilities in one country often lead to concerns in neighboring countries, which may trigger an arms race. As these two nations navigate their fraught relationship, the dynamics of arms imports could significantly influence regional stability in North Africa, affecting both military strategy and diplomatic relations.
