Flight to Ireland disrupted by incomplete sentence for a serious crime

A man's attempt to flee to Ireland was thwarted due to an outstanding sentence for a serious conviction related to a fatal car accident.

On Thursday morning at Kaunas Airport, officials from the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) identified a passenger headed to Dublin, whose search had been initiated by the Marijampole police earlier in March. The 37-year-old man had been sentenced for driving under the influence and causing a car accident, and he had also accumulated an unpaid portion of a prior sentence for murder, resulting in a combined final sentence of two years and four months in prison.

In an attempt to evade serving his sentence, the man had gone into hiding before making plans to leave Lithuania again. After being detained at the airport, the vsat officials informed the authorities who had initiated the search, leading to his temporary custody. He was later transferred to local police officers from Kaunas who arrived at the airport a few hours after the incident.

This incident reflects ongoing efforts by Lithuanian border and law enforcement officials to apprehend individuals wanted for various crimes, with reports indicating that in under three months, VSAT officers have detained 114 individuals, primarily in airports, underlining the effectiveness of surveillance and collaboration between local and international law enforcement agencies.
