The sentence that was not served catches up with a man returning from the United Kingdom after nearly eight years
A Lithuanian man who evaded a 60-day prison sentence was apprehended upon his return from the UK after nearly eight years.
On Sunday afternoon, border guards at Kaunas airport checked the travel documents of passengers arriving from London, where they encountered a 29-year-old Lithuanian citizen who had been in the UK for an extended period. He presented a temporary travel document from the European Union, which was set to expire the next day. However, border officials discovered that he was wanted by the Ukmergė police due to a criminal conviction resulting in a 60-day arrest sentence that he had been avoiding by hiding since 2019.
The search for this individual had initially been launched in December 2019 following his failure to serve the court-imposed sentence. As he attempted to return to Lithuania to collect cigarettes that had been flown in, he was intercepted by border guards and a service dog, which resulted in his arrest. The authorities were promptly notified by the border guards about the apprehension, indicating that he is now in custody, although his exact living situation remains unknown as he claims to reside in the UK.
This incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking down individuals who evade judicial sentences, especially those who may have moved abroad. The arrest signifies the important role that international travel routes play in the enforcement of legal consequences for offenders, demonstrating that the long arms of the law can reach individuals even years after they have attempted to evade it.
